Mustang – The Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal is a bucket list item for all true adventurers.
Protected from rampant tourism by local regulations, it remains one of the last true untouched bastions of the Mighty Himalayas!
A truly once in a lifetime journey to a magical place – providing technical terrain, jaw-dropping vistas and incredible local hospitality!
Arrival Gorakhpur
Arrival in Gorakhpur – the last large city en route the border with Nepal where participants can fly in and transport their motorcycles conveniently. The bikes shall be checked for road-worthiness before an expedition of this magnitude, and any pre-ride adjustments can be made according to your preferences with the help of our team.
A general BP/ O2 check shall follow, providing the team with your baseline readings for the remainder of the trip. This shall take place daily so that to ensure any issues that may occur as we gain altitude in the following days are addressed before they can escalate!
A ride briefing will take place before dinner as the team and group get acquainted with one another and we set down a few guidelines for the days to come. Off to bed with an early start the next morning!

Gorakhpur to Pokhara (280 kms)
The longest and most cumbersome day of the entire adventure, as we set out early from Gorakhpur to beat the rush at Sonauli border before crossing into Nepal. A highway run all the way till the border, where the authorities will scrutinise your bike and luggage, and you will obtain your Bhansar – or customs permit – to ride your bike into Nepal. Our team would have arranged for everything beforehand, but even on a good day, expect to take an hour or two as things are sorted out for you. Once across the border, a short stop for an early lunch, before carrying on towards Pokhara. We may halt at one of the many suspension bridges en route – truly marvels of modern day engineering! Those brave enough can walk across for the sheer thrill of it. Pokhara by the evening – which will be our base for the next few nights!

Around Pokhara
A lazy day in Pokhara today, after the rigours of the previous one! Our team will take the time to process everyone’s paperwork for your entry into Upper Mustang. Enjoy your day at the stunning property by the lake, or step out and visit the official North Face store in the city – the choice is yours!

Pokhara to Lete (140 kms)
A crucial acclimatisation day before hitting the really high altitude in Upper Mustang! We begin from Pokhara post breakfast and make our way towards Lete, gaining altitude quite rapidly! A stop for locally sourced coffee, and the local Thakali Thali for lunch, before reaching Lete for the night, at a property full of character and with some of the most stunning views whichever way you look!

Lete to Charang (110 kms)
Finally the day everyone has been waiting for – as we make our way into Upper Mustang! A few kilometres of tarmac to start with, before the road suddenly turns to dirt and the scenery changes completely! Absolutely mind blowing vistas everywhere you look, with mountains of all colours appearing around each bend. The road is graded dirt and challenging over the course of the full day, but totally worth it. The landscape is totally untouched and we barely cross any other traffic all day long! We halt for the night in the small village of Charang, which will be our home for the next two nights.

Charang - Lo Manthang - Charang (100 kms)
A local loop today, as we head to the famous walled city of Lo Manthang – Mission Accomplished! Another stunning day of riding, as we make our way to the city and then beyond to the caves at Chosar – truly a marvellous sight and well worth the visit! Lunch back at Lo Manthang, before returning to our hotel for the evening.

Charang - Jomsom (140 kms)
Retracing our steps as we begin our return from Upper Mustang. The route looks just as spectacular as on the way up, and by this time riders are far more comfortable with the extended off-road sections of the journey as well – making this an extremely rewarding run all the way till we hit the tarmac. We break off towards Muktinath – one of the most famous pilgrimage sites anywhere in the world, before coming in to Jomsom for the night.

Jomsom - Pokhara (140 kms)
Return to civilization in full, as we make short work of the journey from Jomsom to Pokhara. Be wary of this day, as you would have become accustomed to riding as if nobody else is using the road over the past few days! In by the early evening, to enjoy the property and rest properly for the long day to come.

Pokhara to Gorakhpur (280 kms)
Back through the heavily forested stretches before hitting Sonauli border and returning to India. Paperwork formalities out of the way followed by the short blast to Gorakhpur and our much welcome hotel. One last night of celebration with your fellow travellers – and of course certification for a job well done!

Born and bred in the Himalayas, we at Xplorearth are a group of passionate motorcyclists and 4x4 enthusiasts curating experiences for travellers from across the globe to experience these magical mountains. Our team is highly skilled and we take utmost care to look after every aspect of your journey from the moment you join us so all you need to do is enjoy the ride!
Heritage:
Xplorearth started out as the logistics backbone for the Rally Raid de Himalaya and the pan-India National Superleague TSD Rally Championship. We have not only an unmatched understanding of the region, but also the infrastructure, local contacts and other intangibles that are crucial when organising a trip into these areas, particularly when other connectivity and healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped! Moreover, our experience in the area helps us take riders on routes that most others haven’t even heard of!
Ride Leaders:
Xplorearth has a number of skilled and experienced ride leaders who have been heading expeditions for decades now! We have led rides for renowned brands such as Triumph, BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Royal Enfield and Honda, amongst others, and share the common passion of motorcycling with all our clients – something which transcends all barriers! All of our ride leaders have ridden in various countries across the world and are fluent in English as well as local dialects, making them the perfect guides to lead you through these remote and stunning regions.
Hospitality, accommodation and cultural experiences:
Our team makes it a point to ensure the best possible accommodation even in the most remote regions! We understand the value of comfortable accommodation after a hard day’s riding, and make sure to cut no corners when designing our itineraries in this regard. All the hotels used on the trip shall be 3 or 4 star properties. Homestays and tents offered by other operators sound great in theory, but not so much so after a full day’s riding at high altitude!
Our knowledge of the region also allows us to point out certain cultural nuances and traditions to those who travel with us, making the entire experience a more fulfilling one!
Backup (medical and technical) and comms:
We use an Isuzu V-Cross 4x4 (or multiple, depending on group size!) equipped with a VHF Radio for communication as our backup vehicle for the ride. The vehicle will carry all your luggage other than anything you need to keep on the bike (rain gear etc.), so you will not have to ride a fully loaded bike every day!
The vehicle will have a mechanic onboard, Tool Kit, Puncture Kit, High Volume Air Pump, emergency fuel etc. and can carry a stricken motorcycle if need be, and will sweep the course to ensure everyone is brought home to roost! Unlike most other tour operators, we don’t simply throw everyone’s bag into the back of a local pick-up and hope for the best!
We put the utmost priority on rider safety during our rides. Our team understands the limitations that the remote areas of the Himalayas have when it comes to medical infrastructure and are well equipped to be the first-responders for any medical issue that may arise. We carry a comprehensive medical kit, stretcher, oxygen cylinders to deal with the altitude and so on to ensure that everyone makes it home safe! Our team also carries licensed VHF Radios for the duration of the trip - a base station and hand-held radios for the ride leads to help keep track of all riders during the event – cellular connectivity in the region is extremely spotty!
