Experience Winter Spiti in all its glory - learn more about yourself and your machine in a
week than you would in a lifetime - guided by the best 4x4 instructors and backup team in
the business - mountain born and bred! Learn lessons in 4x4 Snowcraft and ice survival skills
– with temperatures dropping to minus 25 degrees celsius!
Witness the magic of one of the world’s most remote regions in the most brutal and
beautiful time of year, gaining insights into how the local people survive the big freeze
annually. A treat for wildlife enthusiasts – with the possibility of spotting some of the
regions famous fauna – including the elusive Snow Leopard (if you’re incredibly fortunate)!
A completely supported 4x4 expedition – drive through the winter-scape knowing we have
your back all the way through.
The group arrives in Shimla, with an aim to reach by 1500hrs so that we can complete pre-drive formalities.
A general BP/ O2 check shall follow, providing the team with your baseline readings for the remainder of the trip. This shall take place daily so that to ensure any issues that may occur as we gain altitude in the following days are addressed before they can escalate!
A drive briefing will take place over a barbeque as the team and group get acquainted with one another and we set down a few guidelines for the days to come, followed by dinner.
A smooth tarmac drive today, to get everyone accustomed to driving in the mountains. Make your way from Shimla to Narkanda and beyond, driving along the Sutlej before eventually beginning the climb to Kalpa in the early evening, and the first real night at high altitude with sub-zero temperatures – the perfect acclimatisation for the days to come.
We start our journey from Kalpa and, weather permitting, shortly hit a stunning, secluded trail – driving past apple and chilgoza trees for miles without much traffic (if any)! We descend to the main road after a couple of hours and carry on towards Nako, for lunch, and then further past Tabo to Kaza – our home for the next few days. Welcome to Spiti!
The winter wonderland of Langza, Komic and maybe even the post office at Hikkim await, just to see whether the highest post- office in the world (a suitably dubious claim that can be beaten any day by a post box at Komic) is open for business or not.
A cookout in a freezing minus 15 degrees at Langza!! All those carrying stoves and frozen supplies can unleash the Michelin Star chef in their inner beings!
The second day of driving around Kaza, where we can pick from any of multiple routes (ideally the one with the most snow and ice), and try and put into practice all the skills learned over the last few days. Miles and miles of stunning winter wonderland await, something experienced before by very few! Back to Kaza for one last evening together in this magical part of the world.
We begin the adventure as soon as we have thawed out and can leave, taking a detour to the Pin Valley (If the road is open). The ‘learnings’ from 3 days of driving in adverse weather will begin to pay off. Putting on snow chains and removing them will take no time. Practice will make perfect. We double back from Pin to Kalpa for the night. Back to civilization!
A lazy start from Kalpa and we head for Shimla via the National Highway. A chai halt at Badhaal at the Chotiwala dhaba and lunch on the climb to Narkanda should keep everyone fed and content. A certificate distribution ceremony followed by dinner to wind up an amazing adventure - one that is going to imprint itself in your memories forever.
Checkout post breakfast for all, and departure for home. Farewell, but only till next time!
Born and bred in the Himalayas, we at Xplorearth are a group of passionate motorcyclists and 4x4 enthusiasts curating experiences for travellers from across the globe to experience these magical mountains. Our team is highly skilled and we take utmost care to look after every aspect of your journey from the moment you join us so all you need to do is enjoy the drive!
Xplorearth started out as the logistics backbone for the Rally Raid de Himalaya and the pan-India National Superleague TSD Rally Championship. We have not only an unmatched understanding of the region, but also the infrastructure, local contacts and other intangibles that are crucial when organising a trip into these areas, particularly when other connectivity and healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped! Moreover, our experience in the area helps us take participants on routes that most others haven’t even heard of!
Xplorearth has a number of skilled and experienced drive leaders who have been heading expeditions for decades now! All of our drive leaders have driven in various countries across the world and are fluent in English as well as local dialects, making them the perfect guides to lead you through these remote and stunning regions.
Our team makes it a point to ensure the best possible accommodation even in the most remote regions! We understand the value of comfortable accommodation after a hard day’s driving, and make sure to cut no corners when designing our itineraries in this regard. All the hotels used on the trip shall be 3 or 4 star properties. Homestays and tents offered by other operators sound great in theory, but not so much so after a full day’s driving at high altitude!
Our knowledge of the region also allows us to point out certain cultural nuances and traditions to those who travel with us, making the entire experience a more fulfilling one!
We use an Isuzu V-Cross 4x4 (or multiple, depending on group size!) equipped with a VHF Radio for communication as our backup vehicle for the drive.
The vehicle will have a mechanic onboard, Tool Kit, Puncture Kit, High Volume Air Pump, emergency fuel etc. and will sweep the course to ensure everyone is brought home to roost! Unlike most other tour operators, we don’t simply throw everyone’s bag into the back of a local pick-up and hope for the best!
We put the utmost priority on participant safety during our drives. Our team understands the limitations that the remote areas of the Himalayas have when it comes to medical infrastructure and are well equipped to be the first-responders for any medical issue that may arise. We carry a comprehensive medical kit, stretcher, oxygen cylinders to deal with the altitude and so on to ensure that everyone makes it home safe! Our team also carries licensed VHF Radios for the duration of the trip - a base station and hand-held radios for the drive leads to help keep track of all vehicles during the event – cellular connectivity in the region is extremely spotty!
